A recent study coming out of Princeton has found that the United States is no longer a democracy, but really an oligarchy. An oligarchy is a system where a small group of people have control of the country. This small group consists of people that are rich, super connected and extremely powerful in politics. Honestly, this doesn’t really surprise me. When mandatory background checks for guns have over an 80% approval rate by the American population but there’s been no legislation successfully passed, you start to wonder how democratic America is anymore.
The people behind the study, Martin Gilens and Benjamin Page, looked at 1,800 policy initiatives from 1981 to 2002 and then compared these policies with the opinions of the public. Through this comparative analysis, they saw that preferences of Americans at the 90th percentile of income were followed more frequently by the government than Americans at the 50th percentile.
Basically, the conclusion here is that the fantastically wealthy, giant corporations and special interests with money and power make all of the decisions for the United States. Again, not surprised.
